# upAPI

> An API marketplace and gateway. One API key and one pooled quota call every
> operation in the catalog — social media, search, maps, finance, developer
> tools, file and browser operations — over a single uniform HTTP contract, so
> integrating the tenth API costs no more than the first.

## Calling an API

Every operation is one POST, authenticated with one header:

    POST https://api.upapi.io/{slug}
    X-Api-Key: <your key>
    Content-Type: application/json

    { ...operation input... }

- `{slug}` is the operation id from the catalog, e.g. `ip-geolocation.get`.
- The request body is the operation's input schema; the response body is its
output schema. Both are published per operation (see Catalog below).
- Errors share one envelope — `{"error":{"code":"...","message":"..."}}` — with
the HTTP status matching the code. `RATE_LIMITED` is the per-minute burst
gate and is safe to retry after `Retry-After`; `QUOTA_EXCEEDED` is the
monthly plan quota and is not.
- Usage is metered in weighted units: operations cost what they cost to run, so
a cheap lookup and a browser-backed screenshot do not bill the same.

## Documentation

- [Docs](https://upapi.io/docs): the platform guide — authentication, the
universal request contract, errors, quotas, the SDK and the MCP server.
- [Full docs corpus](https://upapi.io/docs/llms-full.txt): every documentation
page concatenated as Markdown, for loading into context in one fetch.
- [Docs index](https://upapi.io/docs/llms.txt): the page tree alone, if you want
to fetch pages selectively. Any docs page also has a `.md` twin at its own
  URL plus `.md`.

## Catalog

- [Marketplace](https://upapi.io/marketplace): browse and search every public
operation, with its schema and copy-paste snippets.
- [All APIs by category](https://upapi.io/apis): the crawlable directory.
- [Catalog JSON](https://app.upapi.io/api/catalog): every public operation with
its input and output schema, machine-readable.
- [OpenAPI](https://app.upapi.io/api/openapi.json): the same surface as an
OpenAPI document, including each operation's unit weight. `/openapi.json`
  on this host redirects there.
- [API catalog](https://upapi.io/.well-known/api-catalog): RFC 9727 linkset of
the gateway, the MCP server and every public operation.
- [MCP server card](https://upapi.io/.well-known/mcp/server-card.json): the
hosted MCP server's name, version, endpoint and OAuth metadata.
- Markdown: the home page, `/pricing` and every page under `/apis` and `/tools` have a
Markdown twin at their own URL plus `.md` (the home page's is
`/index.md`), also served to a request that sends `Accept: text/markdown`.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is upAPI?

upAPI is an API marketplace where one API key and one request shape call every public API in the catalog, from search and social data to developer tools and finance. Each API runs on upAPI’s own workers, so there is one maintainer and one price list, and every call spends from a single pooled monthly quota.

### How do I call an API on upAPI?

Send a POST request with a JSON body to api.upapi.io, naming the API in the path and passing your key in the X-Api-Key header. The same request shape works for every API in the catalog, so there is no per-provider account, base URL or key. An official SDK, @upapi/sdk, is on npm, and every API page has a copy-ready snippet.

### How does upAPI billing work?

A call costs its operation’s weight in units: 1 for a plain read, up to 20 for the heaviest, such as a headless browser rendering a page. One monthly quota covers every public API, pooled across all keys in your organization. You only pay for calls we ran: a rejected request, a throttled call, a replayed retry and a cached response cost zero. When the quota runs out, calls return 429 instead of billing an overage.

### Is there a free tier or a free trial?

Both. The Free tier is 1,000 units a month, permanently, with no card. Each paid tier offers a 14-day trial that includes 10% of that tier’s monthly units, once per organization; a trial goes through checkout, so it needs a card. You can also explore the marketplace and run operations as a guest before you sign up.

### Can I use upAPI from an AI agent or an MCP client?

Yes. Operations are exposed as MCP tools. The hosted server signs you in over OAuth 2.1 with PKCE, so no key is written to a config file, and serves every public operation; the published @upapi/mcp stdio server runs on your own machine with your own key and catches up in its next release. Tool calls are metered on the same quota as an HTTP request.

### How is upAPI different from RapidAPI?

RapidAPI is a hub where independent providers list thousands of APIs, each with its own pricing plan. upAPI is one maintained catalog: every public operation runs on upAPI’s own workers and draws on one pooled quota, so you hold one key and get one bill. The trade-off is breadth. If the API you need is niche, look on RapidAPI first.

### Are proxies charged separately?

No. Datacenter and residential egress are included in the unit price of the operations that need them, so there is no bandwidth meter and no per-GB line. If you need the same exit IP across a chain of requests, you can supply your own per call.
